My Country
A country is a region that we live on.
I’m from Sri Lanka. My homeland is Sri Lanka. Because it is a pearl found in the Indian Ocean, it is known as “the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.” Sri Lanka is an Asian country. Sri Lanka is divided into nine provinces and 25 districts. Sinhala is our national language.
Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte is the capital city of Sri Lanka. The national flag of Sri Lanka is known as the lion flag.
Tea, rubber, and coconut are the three main crops grown here.
- The national tree of Sri Lanka is the Ironwood tree (Naa tree).
- The national flower of Sri Lanka is the blue water lilly (Nil Manel).
- The national bird of Sri Lanka is the Ceylon jungle fowl (Wali Kukula).
Sri Lanka has extensive mountain ranges and gardens. Piduruthalagala is the highest peak. Mahaweli is the longest river. Bambarakanda is the tallest waterfall. Botanical gardens in Sri Lanka include Peradeniya, Hagalla, and Dalada Maaligaava is a temple of the tooth in Kandy.
Foreigners who like wild life visit the sanctuaries like Wilpatthu, Yala, Kumana, Wasgomuwa, Udawalawe and Sinharaja World Heritage Nature Reserve. Wilpatthu is famous for elephants and leopards. Yala is famous for deer. Kumana is famous for birds. Wasgomuwa and Udawalawe are famous for elephants. Sinharaja is famous for rare plants and insects.
There are four main communities in Sri Lanka. They are Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher.. The symbol for Buddhism is the Wheel of Dhamma (Dhammachakraya). The symbol for Christianity is the Cross. The symbol for Hinduism is the OM. The symbol for Islam is the Cresent and the Star.
Festivals in sri lanka
Sinhalese and Tamil celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in the month of April. Deepawali is a Hindu festival of lights, marks the victory of light over darkness. On a full moon Poya day in May, Buddhists in Sri Lanka commemorate the Birth, Englishment and Death of Lord Buddha in a festival called Vesak. Christmas Day is a holiday observed all over Sri Lanka to commemorate the Birth of Jesus Christ. Muslims all over Sri Lanka fast during the month of Ramadan and celebrate Eid-al-Fitr festival at the end of it.
Sri Lankans are very friendly and hospitable. I am very proud of my country.
